The 123.ie Athletics Ireland annual awards presentation took place in Santry, Dublin on November 20. The breathtaking performance of Cathal Doyle, a member of the organising club Clonliffe Harriers, in winning the Morton mile at the 2024 Morton Games was recognised by the sport's governing body in awarding Doyle the prestigious ‘inspirational performance on Irish soil’.
Doyle, who is currently on a warm weather training camp in South Africa, was represented by his parents at the awards ceremony with his award accepted by his mother Olive.
The Morton mile on July 12, last was a fitting climax to a superb Morton Games. Doyle hunted down 2018 Morton Mile winner Sam Prackel (USA) and only hit the front with his trademark kick down the home straight, chased all the way to the line by Brian Fay (IRL). A race that brought the house down! Doyle's winning time was 3.52.06, this was a massive mile PB and sits in 2nd place on the all-time fastest Morton mile list behind Will Leer (USA)’s stadium record of 3.51.82.
Morton Games 2025 has been confirmed for Friday, July 11 and once again is a world athletics Continental bronze tour meet.
